It was a bit of a shock to hear a Nighean sgoile 14-bliadhna announce casually to everyone in the class that she was “into kink”. We were in front of 20 other young people in a talk about the potential risks around internet porn. That was already three years ago. ‘Breath play’ or ‘air play’ is potentially lethal. The porn industry and its pundits have rebranded non-fatal strangulation as “play” so it sounds safe and fun. It isn’t. You just need to consent and it’s all ok. It’s not. Police have informed us that sexual strangulation is one of the fastest growing areas of crime today. New research indicates a wide range of injuries that can be sustained by this activity. For instance according to lead researcher, Dr Helen Bichard, “Sexual strangulation is the second most common cause of stroke in women under 42.” It is clear that pornography use is a contributory factor in making such sexual behaviour seem normal and even attractive.

Is e pàirt den tarraing a th ’ann an creideas le bhith a’ cuingealachadh nan slighean adhair, gum faod neach eòlas fhaighinn air àrd gnèitheasach nas motha. A rèir a Sgrùdadh porn Sunday Times in 2019 on how internet pornography is changing sexual attitudes, twice as many young women as young men in Gen Z rated BDSM and rough sex as their favourite genres of porn. It’s found all over the web as well in most social media apps. However the real hidden damage is not from restricting oxygen because people can survive for a few minutes without oxygen. The real terror is from blocking the jugular vein that allows deoxygenated blood from the brain to return to the body. When the vein is restricted the blood builds up in the brain and can cause a stroke. A person can pass out in as little as 4 seconds with pressure on the jugular vein. Sometimes the stroke happens hours, days or weeks after the event making it harder to link to the sexual strangulation event. Often too the victim can’t even remember what happened as the acute stress affects the brain’s memory system.

Gu duilich, ann an cùisean mar Grace Millane, “breath play” can go too far. Grace was a British backpacker in New Zealand. A young guy she’d just met online fatally strangled her in a sexual assault. Grace is far from the exception. It’s the cool, edgy sexual sport for youth today. Worth knowing that the young man convicted of her murder had told Tinder dates that he liked strangulation.

What are people really consenting to when they are ignorant of the health and legal consequences?

Rannsachadh meidigeach ùr air tachdadh gnèitheasach

Ann an artaigil sàr-mhath le Louise Perry ann an Standpoint Magazine, bidh sinn ag ionnsachadh mu dheidhinn ùr rannsachadh by Dr Helen Bichard. Dr Bichard is a clinician at the North Wales Brain Injury Service. She talks about “a range of injuries caused by non-fatal strangulation that can include cardiac arrest, stroke, miscarriage, incontinence, speech disorders, seizures, paralysis, and other forms of long-term brain injury.” Dr Bichard goes on to say that “the injuries caused by non-fatal strangulation may not be visible to the naked eye, or may only become evident hours or days after the attack, meaning that they are far less obvious than injuries like wounds or broken bones, and so may be missed during a police investigation.” The study also reports, “Psychological outcomes included PTSD, depression, suicidality, and dissociation. Cognitive and behavioural sequelae were described less frequently, but included memory loss, increased aggression, compliance, and lack of help-seeking. However, no studies used formal neuropsychological assessment: the majority were medical case studies, or based on self-report.”

Tha e a 'toirt less pressure to cause brain injury than it takes to open a can of Coke.  See this artaigil sàr-mhath airson tuilleadh fiosrachaidh. Chan urrainnear cead a thoirt seachad no a tharraing air ais ma thòisicheas cuideigin gad thachdadh sa bhad - agus bidh mòran a’ dèanamh. Tha seo ga dhèanamh mì-laghail agus gu math cunnartach do shlàinte.

Yet sexology researchers say it’s “exciting”.

Sadly many researchers are not truly independent. Some are close to the porn industry, receive funding, don’t always report a conflict of interest and downplay the effects of porn’s impact. Too often their research is reported without careful scrutiny by busy journalists who are not trained in science nor aware of the games being played. This is leading to huge gaps in the public’s awareness and need for information with which to make informed choices about their behaviour.

Here is an excerpt from this sexology paper:

“Faodaidh daoine òga buannachd fhaighinn bho bhith ag ionnsachadh mar a bhruidhneas iad agus a nì iad aonta co-cheangailte ri tachdadh agus cuideachd mar as urrainn dhaibh cunnartan slàinte a lasachadh ma roghnaicheas iad a dhol an sàs ann an tachdadh. Leis gum faodadh aon seòrsa tachdadh a bhith aig daoine ach chan e seòrsa eile, agus gun deach faighinn a-mach gu bheil tachdadh ceangail nas cunnartaiche na bhith a’ cleachdadh làmhan (ged a dh’ fhaodadh an dàrna cuid a bhith marbhtach) (De Boos, 2019; Zilkens et al., 2016), is dòcha gu bheil e cudromach do luchd-foghlaim gnèitheachas dòighean soilleir a theagasg air conaltradh mu dheidhinn tachdadh. Le bhith a’ dèanamh seo dh’ fhaodadh e daoine a chuideachadh gu bhith a’ tuigsinn nan dòighean eadar-dhealaichte a bhios daoine a’ dol an sàs ann an tachdadh agus beachdachadh air dè a tha, no nach eil, deònach feuchainn. Bhiodh e ciallach luchd-foghlaim slàinte feise bruidhinn mu fhaclan sàbhailte a bharrachd air gluasadan sàbhailte, leis gur dòcha nach urrainn dha daoine a tha air an tachdadh bruidhinn agus mar sin nach urrainn dhaibh faclan a chleachdadh gu h-èifeachdach gus stad a chuir air tachdadh a tha iad airson a thighinn gu crìch. ”

Tha cus eòlaichean feise a’ làimhseachadh tachdadh / tachdadh gnèitheasach mar leudachadh fallain air sgrùdadh feise gun a bhith a’ tuigsinn gach cuid na cunnartan slàinte is laghail a tha an lùib na cùise co-cheangailte ri cead.

Seo na thuirt aon neurosurgeon mar fhreagairt don rannsachadh seo:

“Mura toir na h-ùghdaran rabhadh gun teagamh mun chunnart bho chuideam sam bith air beulaibh an amhaich anns an deasbad aca, bhiodh e neo-chùramach dhaibh aig a’ char as fheàrr, gu sònraichte leis gu bheil iad co-cheangailte ri roinnean slàinte poblach agus saidheansan slàinte.

An toiseach, tha cuideam sam bith air na h-artaigilean carotid ann an cunnart sgaradh carotid, an adhbhar as cumanta airson stròc ann an daoine òga. Faodaidh eadhon cuideam a tha coltach nach eil cho beag an reubadh dlùth-chàirdeas den artaireachd. Ann an neur-lannsaireachd bidh sinn gu cunbhalach a’ toirt air ais na h-artaireachd nuair a nochdas an spine cervical roimhe, agus tha sinn an-còmhnaidh socair ann a bhith a’ beachdachadh air dissection iatrogenic. Chan eil dòigh sàbhailte air ‘ìre’ a dhèanamh nuair a tha cuideam co-aontach ‘sàbhailte’, gu sònraichte le fireannaich a tha air bhioran gu feise.

San dàrna h-àite, tha cunnart ann gun tèid ocsaidean a chuir gu aon taobh, a’ toirt air falbh ocsaidean don eanchainn gu ìre sam bith, airson ùine sam bith, cunnart bho thachartasan ischemic aig ìre uisge, agus chan eil e a-riamh sàbhailte. Is e hypoxia a th ‘ann an asphyxiation erotic, agus mar sin tha e an-còmhnaidh cronail agus cunnartach. Chan eil dòigh shàbhailte ann airson hypoxia a rangachadh.

San treas àite, tha na cuirp carotid nan luchd-mothachaidh bruthadh-fala a tha suidhichte nuair a bhios na h-artaigilean carotid a 'dol a-steach do na carotids a-staigh agus a-muigh.

Bidh lighichean a’ dèanamh massage carotid a dh’aona ghnothach le bhith a’ cur cuideam gu socair air na cuirp carotid airson adhbharan breithneachaidh sònraichte. Is e seo an aon chomharra airson neach sam bith a bhith a 'cur cuideam de sheòrsa sam bith air beulaibh an amhaich leis na corragan. Tha e an-còmhnaidh air a choileanadh le lighiche a-mhàin, agus dìreach le sgrùdadh EKG agus ocsaideanachadh cuisle. Tha seo air sgàth gu bheil cuideam bodhaig carotid a’ leigeil sìos am bruthadh-fala agus cuisle agus uaireannan bheir e air a’ chridhe stad a bhith a’ bualadh ann an euslaintich so-leònte. Tha na cuirp carotid suidhichte anns an spine cervical meadhanach gu àrd, dìreach far a bheil tachdadh a’ tachairt.

Ann an geàrr-chunntas, chan eil dòigh shàbhailte ann a-riamh air cuideam a chuir air amhach neach sam bith, agus bu chòir dùbhlan a thoirt do neach-proifeiseanta sam bith nach eil a’ sònrachadh seo ann an sgrìobhadh mu dheidhinn seo.

Tha e gòrach a bhith den bheachd gum bi e comasach dha fireannach [no boireann] a tha air a thrèanadh gu feise, air a thrèanadh gu feise, an ìre teannachaidh a tha e [/ i] a’ dèanamh air na h-artaigilean carotid agus bodhaig carotid a rangachadh gu sàbhailte. Chan eil am fòcas aige aig an àm sin gu cinnteach air mathas an duine air a bheil e a’ toirt ionnsaigh.  Chan urrainnear an seòrsa ionnsaigh seo a mhìneachadh mar cho-aontachail, leis nach eil dòigh ann air cead fiosraichte a thoirt seachad."

Fir a ’tachdadh boireannaich

Tha fireannaich an-aghaidh boireannaich gu mòr a’ dèanamh strangulation, ach tha mòran lesbaich agus com-pàirtichean dà-ghnèitheach an sàs ann cuideachd. Tha e a’ sìor fhàs cumanta ann an cùisean fòirneart dachaigh. Thug na Seulan Nuadh a-steach eucoir de shàrachadh gnèitheach neo-mharbhtach ann an 2018. Eadar Faoilleach agus Ògmhios ann an 2019 chaidh aithris air còrr air 700 casaid ann an Sealan Nuadh, timcheall air 4 gach latha.

Tha Harriet Harman BP còmhla ri BP eile a ’feuchainn ri casg a chuir air dìon murt‘ gnè garbh ’anns a’ Bhile Mì-ghnàthachaidh Dachaigheil. Tha Brexit agus a-nis Covid-19 air dàil a chur air siubhal a ’Bhile tron Phàrlamaid. Tha cuid ag ràdh gur e an dìon “50 Shades of Grey” a mhurt aig àm feise. Harmann ris an canar air ais sa Ghiblean 2020 “gus stad a chur air an ana-ceartas seo” de dhìon geama feise a tha a ’ciallachadh gu bheil fear a tha ag aideachadh gun do rinn e leòn a mharbhas boireannach“ gu litearra a ’faighinn air falbh le murt”.

cead

We have to be aware of how culture can distort sexual behaviour, especially among the young. Glamourising consensual violence with sexual partners, 50 Shades of grey-style, without a counterbalanced view of the real risks involved, is a dangerous road to tread. Sexually adventurous, free speech activists are promoting lessons in schools about consent to BDSM. What they don’t mention are the real medical facts about the harms such as we see above nor the extremely difficult legal issues around consent when the “he said, she said” approach leaves juries in rape, sexual assault or homicide cases at a loss to know the truth. Until we take an honest medical and legal approach to this issue, many more young people will be injured for life or worse.
